Jana Hungarter
Principal and Senior Project Manager
I grew up in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Being the youngest of four children and the only girl, I was constantly pushing myself to keep up with the bigger, the stronger, and the older. My parents both had careers that were exciting to witness and be around.
My father started his career in military intelligence; after returning from Vietnam, he went to work for the Pennsylvania State Crime Commission in Harrisburg, after which he started his own private investigation business. He had a home office (our living room), and I was often awoken by the click-clack of the typewriter and the beep-buzz of the fax machine. My father is a great storyteller, and he has many stories to tell.
My mother is a designer—an artist with a career focused in the package design industry. My childhood home was adorned with her paintings, pottery, and other makings. Sometimes she brought work home and spread pencils, papers, straight edges, French curves, geometric templates, markers, and drawings all over the dining room table (we ate a lot of TV dinners). Her work looked fun, colorful, and messy. I wanted to be an artist.

Growing up in a relatively large family and playing almost every team sport available to me since kindergarten has also influenced the way I think and work. Team camaraderie is critical in the building industry. We are a diverse group of people coming together to make something the best it can possibly be; we are oftentimes challenged to work within a set of constraints. These constraints may be vaguely defined, or they may be well-defined. With constraint, there is also opportunity. Working with a team to find the opportunity for creative resolve is what I love most about being a project manager at Krekow Jennings.
I attended Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts, as an undergraduate student. I focused my studies on art history, architectural studies, studio art, and mathematics. I graduated cum laude with a liberal arts degree in art history. I also played varsity women’s basketball, varsity women’s soccer, and women’s club rugby. During the summer after my sophomore year at Brandeis, I attended the Career Discovery Program at Harvard University (a summer architectural studio design course). I was hooked; after graduating from Brandeis, I went straight into the Master of Architecture program at the University of Pennsylvania. I graduated in 2002.
Prior to making my move to Krekow Jennings, I worked as an architect for Mitchell Giurgola Associates (Philadelphia), Bohlin Cywinski Jackson (Philadelphia and Seattle), Archer & Buchanan Architects (West Chester, PA), and finally Stillwater Dwellings, Inc. (Seattle). Transitioning from architect to construction project manager has been a smooth process for me. Even as an architect, I often found myself on the construction end of the process.
My past experiences have prepared me well for a long future with Krekow Jennings, and as every new opportunity emerges for me here, I become more and more excited and thankful to be a part of this great team. I do hope to have the opportunity to serve your project well.
