Chris Campfield

Senior Project Manager

I grew up in the Seattle area, the son of a carpenter turned entrepreneur when he and my mother started the family business, Campfield Construction, in 1990. Becoming a builder was not always the plan. After starting college at the University of Washington,  I was interested in pursuing international business or photography, but nothing clicked until construction. I pursued a degree in Construction Management. I knew right away that building was my passion. It was like I had come home, everything made sense.

Some builders were born with a hammer in their hand.  I was born with a crowbar. It was those years of experience in actual day-to-day construction (demo, driving the dump truck, carpentry) that helped me to excel in the program.

At UW I led my team to 1st place in the Residential Division competition.  Working in high-end remodels in the Seattle area, everybody had heard of Krekow Jennings. They are known to be the best.  I made it my goal to work for the best.

All in a single month I graduated from UW, married my wife (now of 20 years), and started my career at KJ.

My first role at KJ was as a project engineer, building a tunnel under a highway while it was still in operation. At the same time KJ gave me an incredible opportunity to be mentored by an excellent project manager, who taught me more in 6 months about project management than I had learned in the previous 4 years.

KJ is a breeding ground for creativity and excellence. Encouraging us to be the best versions of ourselves. I started to read voraciously – focusing on subjects like building science, leadership, and business.

A love of adventure brought our growing family to Sun Valley – then Kauai  – and back again.  All the while working with some of the best builders at KJ, soaking in everything they could teach me.

Faced with a new exciting opportunity, I then spent 5 years owning and operating an adventure van conversion company.  This change shifted my focus to manufacturing and efficiency, providing a unique and valuable perspective to high-end construction. My two business partners and I also operated a general contracting firm and an owners representation firm doing consulting work. I wore all the hats required to run multiple small businesses. From bookkeeping to marketing, human resources, sales, and everything in between. My time also included designing cabinets, managing the mechanics and technicians, and R&D.

To my great delight, I was welcomed back to KJ after my entrepreneurial itch was scratched.

I have come to the conclusion that every business, no matter what service it provides or product it sells, is, in the end, a people business. In concert with that outlook, when situations arise in life requiring a choice, my priority is to put the relationship first.

Construction, in my opinion, is ideal in that it allows us who choose this path to leave the world in a better place than we found it. Our daily efforts are very tangible. Over the course of a project, or a career full of projects, the results are very rewarding to reflect upon.  To that same end, when not guiding projects, I give all my time to my wife and three teenage children.

But when they are busy and if you know where to look, you can find me in the mountains.
