David Guthrie
Principal in Charge of Small Projects / Senior Project Manager
As the son of a builder of power stations around the world, I was enamored from a young age by complex, hands-on problem-solving opportunities. I spent most of my youth building, fabricating, and often trying to fix my mistakes (I never did get my childhood dishwasher working again). My parents allowed me to take over the garage, and it became my personal shop retreat.
My summers before college were spent working in construction for my best friend’s father. This was, in many ways, my introduction to architecture and construction.
Originally from the East Coast, I found my way west to pursue outdoor adventures while studying architecture. While in architecture school, my cohorts tended to gravitate toward working in architectural offices during school breaks. I instead sought opportunities to work in the field.
After finishing my graduate degree at the University of Washington, my previous experience in construction provided me the skill set to bridge the gap between design and construction. For much of my architectural career, I worked directly with the fabricators and builders charged with realizing the design vision.
This architectural background helps ensure KJ is on track with project expectations before construction starts. Throughout my career, I’ve consistently prioritized the integration of buildings with their surrounding landscapes—a dedication evidenced by my involvement in several award-winning private residences across the Western United States and Canada.

As a member of KJ since 2016, I have managed work for several high-end residential projects. I have helped grow our Service Department, and I’ve helmed the development of our Small Projects Group as principal. I combine experience in architecture and construction with a diligence for executing the designer’s intent for each project. My strength is facilitating the process, from concept to design development to construction, while steadfastly representing the owners’ goals. I am versatile, a good communicator, and I’m collaborative with owners, artisans, and designers involved in each project.
